Startup Weekend Seoul Begins

Posted by Startup Weekend Seoul

At the time of writing (Day 2 around 8:30pm) looking around the open conference space, startup groups are in full development mode. The mood and feel of the participants right now is one of compete concentration and unity. Its one of the sights you see that makes your tummy nice and warm and reaffirms us that we are part of something very special.

A quick recap of the day before:

103 bright minds filled the NHN ZELZON TOWER in Jeong-ja. For folks new to NHN thats the company that owns ventures such as Naver and Enswers.

9 of the attendees were female (see there is a demand there ^^)

48 Pitches ranging from location aware apps to language learning tools were delivered. Unfortunately not being a Korean speaker, I missed out on a few of the finer points.
Best part of the pitching session had to be when one lady said “6 degrees of separation” and then the entire room gasped ^^ too much English in presentation!?

Voting took place and ideas where narrowed down to 10 of the very best ideas.

What where those ideas? Check out the intros to the teams below and stay posted for the final pitch and presentation.
It’s gonna be something special ^^

Schedule

DAY-1 / Friday

7:00pm ~ 7:30pm      Doors open, meet and greet.

7:30pm ~ 8:30pm      Orientation with light dinner.

8:30pm ~ 9:30pm      Pitch time!

Anyone can pitch. This is a self-selection process. People will gather around ideas that they think are interesting and would like to work on for the weekend. So go for it!

Hard limit to 2-minutes each, so get to the point.

  1. State the problem you are trying to solve
  2. How you plan to solve it
  3. What/who you need over the weekend.

9:30pm ~ 10:30pm    Select ideas to build and build teams.

Meet and talk each other who are interested in the same idea. Form teams around the selected ideas based on interest and skill sets required to build the ideas. Teams solidify their concept. By Saturday morning, team selection should be completed.

10:30pm                        End of Day-1.

DAY-2 / Saturday

9:00am ~ 9:00pm     Work! Development! (Breakfast at 9am, Lunch at 12pm, Dinner at 6pm)

Act, Build, Create, and Develop your product! If your product is a web service, you may buy your domain and bind your service to it.

9:00pm                         End of Day-2.

Final / Sunday

9:00am ~ 5:00pm     Development! (Breakfast at 9am, Lunch at 12pm)

Release your product, prototype or whatever! Go live with your service!

5:00pm ~ 7:00pm     Final Presentation!

Pitch your best presentation before a panel of judges. 5-minutes maximum. More or less time will be given depending on how many teams need to present. Most importantly, demo your product. We are lucky to have Geeks On A Plane on your final presentaion.

7:00pm ~ 7:30pm      Judge time! Closing of Final Day.

While top three teams win nominal prizes, the most important takeaway will be an experience of building a team around an idea, working together and delivering a product in a short period of time. You will earn much more than just a prize. The human network you create during the weekend will last forever. One or more of people at the Startup Weekend could be your future co-founder(s).

7:30pm ~ 10:00pm    Networking party with GeeksOnaPlane

Meet-up and build your worldwide networks with super angels and entrepreneurs from Geeks On A Plane.
